Conference: Everyday Urban Violence and Security in the Maghreb
December 4, 2018 - 9 am to 4 pm
Aalborg University Copenhagen, A. C. Meyers Vænge 15, 2450 København
DIGNITY and its partners in Tunisia and Morocco invite you to the conference ‘Everyday Urban Violence and Security in the Maghreb’ with a focus on Tunisia and Morocco as part of our joint work under the Danish Arab Partnership Programme. The conference moves beyond the macro level focus and addresses the challenges of ‘everyday urban violence and security’ with a focus on everyday life conditions, and local, municipal, and national stakeholders. Everyday experiences of violence are a burden to a larger number of ordinary citizens and constitute a root cause of pending social and political challenges and dynamics in the Maghreb.
The conference is set within the framework of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) No. 11: ‘Sustainable Cities and Communities’, No. 5: ‘Gender Equality’ and No. 16: ‘Peace, justice and strong institution’ as a multisectoral approach is necessary to encompass and address the root causes of urban violence and security in the Maghreb region.
Presentations are given by leading Tunisian, Moroccan and international researchers and practitioners. The opening of the conference features a presentation by DIGNITY’s Tunisian civil society partner L’Art Rue, an NGO which uses art to reach out to youth to prevent violence in the Medina of Tunis.
The closing roundtable raises the question of how donors and foreign CSOs can contribute to a safer world, inclusive societies and rights for all urban residents in the Maghreb region through partnerships with local civil society, municipal and governmental agencies and the international development and human rights world.
The conference is moderated by Steen Nørskov, journalist at the Danish Broadcast, former Middle East and North Africa senior correspondent.
The conference is organized in collaboration with Global Refugee Studies and Aalborg University.
