Dr. reem Endurun, what is the most challenging aspect of your work at the moment?<\/strong><\/p>

For more than ten years, we have worked on medico-legal documentation of human rights violations in Syria, particularly cases of torture, ill-treatment and violence against detainees and survivors.<\/p>

Today, following the fall of the Assad regime, we are entering a new phase with different and even more complex challenges.<\/p>

On one hand, large numbers of survivors have been released from detention centres, while many others are returning from different countries. This has significantly increased the need for medico-legal documentation, as well as for comprehensive health, psychological and social support.<\/p>

At the same time, the establishment of national judicial mechanisms, alongside ongoing international justice processes, has created high expectations among survivors for justice and accountability. This places considerable pressure and responsibility on organizations working to support survivors and promote human rights.<\/p>

How are you addressing these challenges in practice?<\/strong><\/p>

A key priority is to strengthen the connection between medico-legal documentation, healthcare, psychosocial support, advocacy and accountability efforts. Our aim is to ensure a more comprehensive and survivor-centred approach, where documentation is not seen in isolation, but as part of a broader effort to support survivors, promote rehabilitation and pursue justice.<\/p>

What has made a tangible difference over the past year?<\/strong><\/p>

One of the most significant developments has been the strengthening of partnerships and collaboration with local and international actors. Expanded cooperation and coordination have improved our ability to reach survivors and respond more effectively to their needs. There is also growing recognition that survivors need support that goes beyond documentation alone. This includes healthcare, mental health support, social assistance and access to justice mechanisms.<\/p>

What gives you hope in your work?<\/strong><\/p>

The survivors themselves. Despite everything they have endured from detention, torture, loss and profound suffering many survivors continue to show extraordinary resilience, dignity and determination. Their strength, and their continued pursuit of justice and recognition, remain a constant source of inspiration.<\/p>

What survivors have experienced is immense and deeply painful. Yet they are here today, and they continue to need and deserve our support, respect and recognition. Their courage gives meaning to our work and reinforces our commitment to pursuing justice, accountability and rehabilitation.<\/p>

I also remain hopeful because of the continued efforts of Syrian civil society and international partners to support survivors and advance accountability processes.
