Survivor: A small drawing on a blackboard pulled me back to the prison in Syria
Torture survivor shares his story with us so that we can understand the devastating impact of torture.

»My hope is that more torture survivors will seek treatment«, says torture survivor from Syria on the UN International Day in Support of Victims of Torture on June 26th.

Today, he shares his story with us, which emerged from a meeting between him and two of our therapists at DIGNITYs clinic in Copenhagen.

In the treatment room, he noticed a blackboard with a small ladder drawn on it.
He turned his face away. He didn’t like the drawing.

The therapists asked him why and he explained that the drawing with the ladder took him back to the prison in Syria.

The torturers had drawn a ladder on the wall in the prison and ordered him to climb it. But there was no ladder – only a drawing of one, he said.
When he refused, he was subjected to torture until he did as the torturers demanded. He repeatedly slammed his body against the wall.

He shares his story with us so that we can understand the devastating impact of torture on individuals.
